The Rental World…a World of its own

Rentals are the one of the most fun and at the same time most tedious tasks of the planning process. Especially when you are working in a blank space! The first thing you need to know is that rentals are EXPENSIVE. But they also make up 80% of your event.

Selecting rental items is very overwhelming to many. There are numerous rental companies in this city and thousands of linens, chairs, glasses, cutlery, and plates to choose from.

Here’s how I like to approach the process:
• Create a vision board highlighting items you like….(Pinterest is a bride’s best friend)
• Share your vision board with your wedding planner
• Visit a few rental companies to see items live, pull a few things you like and then try them together.
• Try to narrow down a look & place a preliminary order to see if you are fitting into your budget.
• Have your wedding planner put together a full table display with place settings, a floral centerpiece and a printed menu so you can see the full effect!

It also really helps to have rental company professionals aid you in the process…….
Lindsay Sacks from LUXE RENTALS & more recently their new acquisition\merger LOCATIONS GERVAIS is the main company I have decided to work with for my wedding. They have a perfect marriage of general inventory like plates and cutlery etc (from Gervais) mixed with some amazing lounge pieces, bars and display towers (from Luxe) …and they are all under one roof. It is also a major advantage to have Lindsay by your side during the selection process. She is incredibly funny & sarcastic (which helps to ease the tension when mothers who may dislike eachother are in the room), super knowledgeable about her products, extremely accommodating and uber-stylish (in fact, we have the exact same taste which makes me love her even more). It is especially fun in the LUXE\GERVAIS showroom when Brian & Charles (owners) walk in because they too are the perfect marriage of business schmooze & design genius. What’s also great about Luxe Rentals is that they can brand almost all of their products…check out this printed chair that Lindsay used during our luncheon in the showroom.

Other major go-to rental companies I like to use are:
CELEBRATIONS RENTALS – because Yves is just the most helpful and sweet man and because being the oldest company in the business – they have tons of selection and quantity. Last November, we were able to decorate a ‘through the eras’ event using vintage prints, sequins, leopards, neon etc…..it was amazing!
BRAVO RENTALS – because their whole team is wonderful and attentive and Andrew Paquette runs a solid business boasting great service and well-maintained products.

Now let me say this. For my wedding, I have literally gone against what I normally preach to brides…..which is to try to work with one company as much as possible in order to avoid losses, ease logistics, avoid extra transportation charges, etc. As you will read from my blog tomorrow, I’m actually using several companies to make my vision come alive. Which brings me to my final point – Rental companies need to stop being so competitive and aggressive with planners and clients because truthfully, I don’t choose a rental company based on who I like but rather which company I think can fulfill my client’s vision….it’s as simple as that.
