Lights, Camera….Revolution

Wedding Videography has come along way over the years. Gone are the days where videographers show up with huge pieces of machinery & big lights, where a couple receives a two -hour video edit, and pay a couple hundred dollars for full day coverage.

These days, professional wedding videographers create short indie films and barely carry anything more than a hand held.

So many people are tempted to cut this part out of their budget but to me, it’s a big no-no.

Why?

1) Photos may tell a story but voices and movement make the story truly come alive. Videos immortalize people, moments and events. It is the nicest thing in the world to see a video of someone who has passed or to even see yourself years back.

2) On your wedding day, you are so caught up that you almost forget to be in the moment. There is one specific moment that is truly surreal and you want to be able to watch it over again – the ceremony and the exchange of vows and rings.

3) This may just be my cheesy self speaking but I think that having a wedding video to watch from time to time over the course of a marriage can really bring a couple back to the roots of their relationship and acknowledge why they got married in the first place.

Side Story:  One of the videos I cherish the most is a home-made one that my close friend Ginn and I made during our three-week expedition through the US. We were 19 years old, we rode the Greyhound Bus (sketchiest mode of transport ever) from Vancouver all the way down to Mexico and back and had a little bit of money and a video camera. We named it ‘Ginn & Tan’s Excellent Adventure (after Bill & Ted’s). We got soooo much amazing & scary footage of the most interesting characters/ex convicts/ runaway wives/ random backpackers/ prostitutes etc that we could literally submit it to “Unsolved Mysteries”. It was a trip of a lifetime and I am so grateful that we have it all documented because when I watch it, it takes me right back there.

As much as I think it is important to have a videographer capture your wedding story, I am also hugely opposed to having 5 cameras on cranes in my face all day and being directed like I am the star of a box-office hit.

Jason & I never doubted having a videographer at our event. We actually take short videos of ourselves frequently interviewing eachother about a certain topic of the day.  Last week, our video was me interviewing him about the meat balls he makes so wonderfully.

Jason & I also never doubted hiring Villaview Cinema to document our wedding day.  I met Mark and James at Villaview Cinema a couple years ago and I swear by them. They don’t give away their service but it is seriously worth every penny.  Not only are Mark & James two phenomenal –looking guys (every wedding we do together, I always have a few girls asking if they are single) but they are the most talented videographers and create such beautiful memories for people. Their ‘modern approach to classic cinema’ is truly revolutionizing the wedding video world. The best part is they remain in the background all day, make you feel so at ease and you barely feel their presence but they manage to collect amazing footage.

Footage that 10 years down the line will bring a huge smile to your face and remember exactly what it was like on the day of your wedding.
