Do you and your fiancé have a wedding personality?
A few years ago, in our office, we built a vision board listing words and phrases describing our ‘perfect client’. (I’m a big believer in the Secret and visualizing what you want). So I was writing down stuff like ‘shops at Zara’, ‘does groceries at the Atwater market’, ‘enjoys restaurants like Tuck Shop’, etc and the girls in my office were shocked and could not understand how any of it had to do with being a ‘perfect bride’. I explained that by asking couples questions like these (‘what’s your favorite resto?, etc), it really allows me to get to know them and establish their wedding personality….and in turn helps to determine your wedding theme.
Before we even got around to determining our wedding personality & theme, Jason and I had the chance to create our vision board for our life together. A seriously fun activity! Consider doing it at home with wine on a Saturday night 😉 I’m a big geek and a huge activity lover but no, I did not coerce Jason to do this over a weekend but rather it was part of our program at our marriage preparation course. Every couple there separated from their partner and sat in their own corner looking through magazines and cutting out images and phrases that represented what they wanted in their marriage and future. At the end of this exercise, it was amazing to link the two collages and see it as a whole….if you are with the right person, the similarities you notice are awesome. It’s also amazing to see how much longer it takes a man to put together an artistic project like this one….(notice how many more words and images my side has (right side)…lol).
Post marriage courses, I decided it would be fun to implement a ‘wedding inspiration hour’ together once a week for the first few months of being engaged in order to come up with our wedding personality….What does this mean? Going to places that both partners like and taking photos of things that catch your attention and resonate with you. Our first inspiration hour was at one of our favorite spots – the SAQ.
Through this process, Jason and I realized two things: 1) we are wino-s and 2) we are passionate about family, history and heritage. Combining those two elements, we narrowed down our wedding theme to: MODERN ITALIAN RENAISSANCE meets THE GODFATHER :-0
The next step was to create a brand representing that theme. Many couples do it with a logo or monogram but I really wanted to create a crest that we can carry on through years to come.
Naturally, I called my two most talented friends, who also run an incredible boutique creative agency called Electric Pixel. Ritou & Amit have been my go-to people for as long as I can remember for anything ‘cool’ and anything related to design, branding, web, and social media. They designed both of my companies’ websites (www.blancevents.ca\ www.tassone.ca), all of my marketing material, have set up this blog and more recently created my most prized image – our wedding logo.
Ritou & Amit’s wedding was the first wedding I ever planned 8 years ago and it was to this day, the best wedding I have ever been to. They are also the pioneers of joint-naming for couples…they are RIMIT, me & Jason are TANJAY (we know, we sound like an Indian couple) and every other couple friends we have in common have their own joint name.
All to say is one of the first steps in planning a DREAM wedding is taking the time to figure out your wedding personality and making it shine through all elements of the event. People attending your wedding want to feel the ‘essence’ of who you are as a couple and want to experience a night in the life of YOU!
Special mention: Another amazing creative force who inspires me constantly is one of my present brides – Sarah Lazar. Not only is this girl extremely EXCITED about every aspect of her wedding (which I love!) but being an entrepreneur and graphic designer , she is working hard at creating a brand for her special day that truly represents her & hubby-to-be. I can’t give much away but a sneak peek at her adorable save-the-date that she designed…(those are genuinely their fingerprints)
